Qu'est-ce que c'est?

All French language learner must have asked this question, "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" In this question, "qu'est-ce que" is the pronom interrogatif which means "what" in English. This question word is of course commonly used. However, some absolute beginners, like me, may confuse it with "quel (m/s) / quelle (f/s) / quels (m/pl) / quelles (f/pl)", which means "what" or "which" in English.

Actually, it is not difficult to use them correctly.

Qu'est-ce que + sujet + verbe (une action)...?

ex. Qu'est-ce que vous faites ce week-end?

ex. Qu'est-ce qu'il lit maintenant?

ex. Qu'est-ce qu'on fait avec cette carte? (Attention: sometimes people ask in this way: "Qu'est-ce que l'on fait avec cette carte?". They want to avoid saying "qu'on" because it sounds like "con" which is a swear word.)

Quel est + nom?

ex. Quelle est la fonction de cette carte?

ex. Quel est ce livre?

Quel + complément + sujet + verbe?

ex. Quel film tu veux regarder?

ex. Quel livre il lit maintenant?

There's one more thing that you should know. "Qu'est-ce que" is used in la forme standard / normale. When you use a different question form / pattern, you need to use the appropriate word to ask "what":

La forme formelle: (very formal)

Que + verbe-sujet...?

ex. Que faites-vous?

ex. Que mangez-vous?

ex. Que buvez-vous?

La forme familière: (very casual)

Sujet + verbe + quoi?

ex. Vous faites quoi? (Attention: Using "vous" does not necessarily imply that you are polite / respect the person very much. You can use "vous" when talking to a thief to show the distance implying that you are not friendly to him / her.)

ex. Tu mange quoi?

ex. Tu bois quoi?

So, if you want to ask a person what he / she is going to do tonight, you can ask in three ways, depending on your relationship with him / her:

Standard: Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire ce soir?

Formel: Que allez-vous faire ce soir?

Familier: Tu vas faire quoi ce soir?
(ça ne te regarde pas! => This is none of your business!)
